Steve represented Team USA on two occasions, helping lead the United States to a gold medal at the FIBA Junior World Championships Qualifying in 1998 and a silver medal at the FIBA Americas Under-20 World Championship Qualifying in 2000, both under the tutelage of long-time Syracuse University coach Jim Boeheim.
Prior to his senior season at Oak Hill, Steve helped lead Team USA to a gold medal in the Third Junior World Championship Qualifying Tournament in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic July 5-11, 1998. En route to compiling a perfect 6-0 record, Steve averaged 14.5 minutes per game and led the team in assists with 20, including a team-high four assists in the gold medal game against Argentina.
In addition, Steve was selected to represent the United States on the FIBA Americas Under-20 World Championship Qualifying team in Ribeirao Preto, Brazil July 19-23, 2000. A silver-medal performance assured Team USA of a spot in the 2001 FIBA World Championship tournament.
